Homework - A Little More Reading and Reflection!

For homework, please read and consider W.H. Auden's poem "Musee des Beaux Arts". After you have read the poem, write a short reflection on it. (3-5 sentences) Don't worry if you feel as though you don't understand everything. Just write down those ideas you have. (Hint: By "Old Masters", Auden means the great painters, like Breughel, from long ago.)

About suffering they were never wrong,
The Old Masters; how well, they understood
Its human position; how it takes place
While someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along;
How, when the aged are reverently, passionately waiting
For the miraculous birth, there always must be
Children who did not specially want it to happen, skating
On a pond at the edge of the wood:
They never forgot
That even the dreadful martyrdom must run its course
Anyhow in a corner, some untidy spot
Where the dogs go on with their doggy life and the torturer's horse
Scratches its innocent behind on a tree.
In Breughel's Icarus, for instance: how everything turns away
Quite leisurely from the disaster; the ploughman may
Have heard the splash, the forsaken cry,
But for him it was not an important failure; the sun shone
As it had to on the white legs disappearing into the green
Water; and the expensive delicate ship that must have seen
Something amazing, a boy falling out of the sky,
had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on.

  1. I think it was about children in the old days, like them being abused or turning into masters.

  4. I think that the poem is about children in the old days. I also think that they are getting picked on by other children. In later years they become masters and great painters.

  6. I think that this poem is describing the painting of Icarus falling down and hitting the water. The author wrote what the people around him could have done, but didn't do.

  7. I think the poem tells us that the old masters were good at capturing bad things happening. But the painters also painted normal life in the same picture. That life goes on no matter what.

  8. I think that the poem tells that old masters were good at suffering. It is also about how hard life is, but you just have to get on with it.

  9. At the start of the poem it is about some people suffering and others are just carrying on with what ever they were doing. At the end of the poem a boy called Icarus falls from the sky and into the water but no-one takes any notice.
