Perseus the myths
ReplyDeleteIntro
I really liked the Perseus myths. I thought that they were interesting and romantic but also keeps you in suspense. The upcoming paragraphs will show you how much I paid attention…
Perseus by Geraldine MCoughrean
King Acrisius of Argos went to see a fortune teller and he found out that he would be killed by his daughter’s son, Perseus. Perseus and his mom Danae were thrown into a chest and they were sent out to sea. A fisherman found them and the king of the island wanted to marry Danae for 17 years and one day he just forced her to marry him. Perseus was dared by King Poledectes to kill the Gorgon Medusa and bring her head back. Perseus is helped by the gods and is given armor like a sword and a shield and flying shoes. Perseus kills the Gorgon and rescues the beautiful Princess Andromeda from being eaten by the Kraken. Medusa’s head petrified the king and Perseus married Andromeda and accidently killed his grandfather.
Perseus by the episode series
Perseus and Danae, his mother, were thrown into the chest for the same reason as the first version, although Perseus was six when he and his mom were floated out to sea. The fisherman, Dictys, was very kind to them but the King Polydectes was a tyrant. He wanted to marry Danae for nine years and then, he forced Danae to marry him. King Polydectes dares Perseus to go and kill the Gorgon and bring back her head. He kills the Gorgon with the help of the gods and then he also rescues Andromeda from the Kraken and then he marries Andromeda, kills Polydectes and accidently kills his granddad.
Clash of the Titans
Perseus and his mom Danae were put into the chest and floated out to sea. Perseus mysteriously landed in Joppa and he was given gifts from the gods and then he was given a riddle from Princess Andromeda and he answered it right so she married her. Then, a goddess punished Andromeda and Perseus had to kill the Kraken and he did by turning it to stone. Then jhe and Andromeda were happy.
The two first versions were pretty much the same but the different thing in the 3rd one is that it had nothing to do with Danae.
Perseus.
ReplyDeleteI am going to write about the different Perseus stories. The second paragraph will be about the summary of the story. The third is going to be about the short film. The fourth one is going to be about the long film. The fifth one is going to be about the conclusion with the comparison and the contrast.
The main characters are; Perseus, Danae, Medusa, Polydectys and Andromeda. Perseus gets sent to an island and lives with a fisherman until Polydectys, the king of the land, challenges him to get the head of the gorgon, Medusa. He manages to and turns the king to stone. Then he saves Andromeda from the Kraken.
The main characters are Perseus, Medusa, Danae, Polydectys and Andromeda. He goes to slay Medusa and manages to. He turns the king to stone and marries Andromeda.
The main characters are Perseus, Medusa, Calibos, Zeus, Kraken, Andromeda, three sisters and Pegasus. Perseus has to save Andromeda being killed by the Kraken. He has to get the head of Medusa to kill the Kraken. He goes to the underworld to get the head of the gorgon. He gets it. Then Calibos tries to get the head of the gorgon. Perseus kills Calibos and the giant scorpions. Then he turns the Kraken to stone.
The conclusion of the story is that he needs to get the head of the gorgon, Medusa. The conclusion of the short film is that he needs to get the head of Medusa. The conclusion of the long film is that he needs to kill the Kraken. The things that are the same with them all are that Perseus needs to slay Medusa. In all of them the girl he likes is called Andromeda. The things that are different are that Perseus needs to kill the Kraken. The other thing is that he needs to go to the underworld.
The End
Perseus
ReplyDeleteIn this story I am going to talk about 3 different stories.
The second paragraph is going to be a summary of the written story. The third paragraph is going to be about the television episode. The fourth one is going to be a summary about the film. The last paragraph is going to be the conclusion. This paragraph I wrote now is the introduction.
In this paragraph I will write about A summary of the story.
In the story Perseus got put in a chest and a few fishermen found the chest, they opened it and put them inside in the warmth. When Perseus grew up he went for a mission to kill medusa. On the way there he found fighting equipment. He picked up a head protection, he put it on and all of a sudden he was invisible. He also found a sword, he also saw sandals. When he put on the sandals he flew.
This paragraph is going to be about a summary of the television episode.
Perseus also went on a mission to kill medusa, but the television episode has a bit more detail in it. On the way Perseus to kill medusa he had some distractions. He first went to 3 sisters which had to share one gray eye between them. Perseus asked the 3 sisters where the monster Medusa was, they didn’t want to tell him. So Perseus asked the 3 sisters for the gray eye. He would give back the eye when the 3 sisters answer the question. Finally the 3 sisters answered where Medusa lives. Perseus threw back the eye, but the sisters couldn’t find the eye because they couldn’t see anything. He had to phase another challenge, he had to fight against one dog which had 2 heads.
This paragraph is going to be about a summary of the film.
In the beginning of the film Perseus was just born, his mom and perseus were closed in a prison, after 6 years they were still in the prison, then perseus was training with a new sward Diane made out of wood. He made so much noise that the king came and was so frustrated, that he told his men to put both of them in a chest and put them in the sea. They were so terrified that they would sink put they didn’t. After a few days a fisherman found the chest and found the 2 people in it. Perydectus was so in love with Diane that he wanted to marry her. Perseus really didn’t really like his mom to marry that stupid man. Perseus said to the man and his mom if I get the head of the snake hair monster you will not marry my mom. He got the head of Medusa and turned polydectus into stone.
I really enjoyed these films and the story, it was really fun watching the television episode, I liked how they did the effect. I didn’t really like reading the story but that is because I don’t like reading myself. For me it was really exciting to watch (a) the movie and (b) the film. I really hope we can do this again with a different story or unit.

THREE VERSIONS OF THE PERSEUS MYTH
ReplyDeleteI’m going to tell you about three versions of the Perseus myth. The first paragraph will be about introduction, the second one is going to be about the story version, the third one will be about an episode of the television series “The Storyteller”, the forth one will be about the movie called “Clash of the Titans” and the last one will be about comparing and contrasting these three versions.
One day King Acrisius of Argos went to a fortune-teller, who said that he would be killed by his grand-son. Acrisius had a daughter called Danae and she had a son called Perseus. After the words of the fortune-teller he told his soldiers to put Danae and her son into the chest and sent them to the sea. Instead of sinking, the chest floated. For the days it floated across the sea until it was caught in the nets of a young fisherman near the shore of a faraway kingdom. The fisherman was called Dictys and he was very kind to Danae and Perseus but unfortunately the king of that country was not as good as Dictys. King Polydectes wanted to marry Danae but Perseus and his mother didn’t like it and Perseus protected her all day and night. Polydectes challenged him to go and get him Medusa’s head. The Gods heard this and gave Perseus three gifts: a magic sword, a magic shield and magic sandals. After a few days Perseus found these presents and went to Gray Sisters because only they knew where Medusa was. Hopefully the Gray Sisters told him where she lived and he left for the searching Medusa. When he found her he used his shield as a mirror, and so he could see her reflection. He cut her head and put into his sack. While he was flying back he heard about a huge sea serpent monster which wanted to kill Andromeda, and so Perseus killed the sea monster with his sword. As he saved Andromeda, he wanted to marry her, but when the wedding ceremony had begun; Phineas arrived with his soldiers to kill Perseus. But Perseus turned them into the stone with Medusa’s head. Then Perseus sailed back to his mother, but the wedding ceremony of his mother and King Polydectes had begun. Perseus rushed into the ceremony and showed the Medusa’s head and everyone except for Andromeda, Danae and him turned into the stone. After a few years Perseus accidently killed his grand-father and became the King.
In the movie called “Clash of the Titans” Perseus and his mother Danae were put into the chest and floated out to the sea. After that Perseus got to Joppa and he was given gifts from the gods. Then he was given a riddle from Princess Andromeda and he answered it right so he married her. After that he got the head of Medusa and Calibos did a cut on it, and so the blood of Medusa’s head turned into scorpions and Perseus had to kill them. Then the Gods punished Andromeda and Perseus killed the Kraken by turning it into the stone with Medusa’s head. And then Perseus got married Andromeda and they were happy.
In the movie from the series Perseus and Danae were thrown into the chest for the same reason as the second version. The fisherman, Dictys, was very kind to them but the King Polydectes wasn’t. He wanted to marry Danae for nine years and then, he forced Danae to marry him. King Polydectes dared Perseus to go and kill the Gorgon and bring her head back. The Gods heard it and gave Perseus the gifts (like in the first version in the story). He killed the Gorgon. Then he saved Andromeda from Kraken and got married her. After that he turned Acrisius and his people into the stone. After a few years he accidently killed his grand-father and became the King.
In this paragraph I’m going to tell you about the differences and the similarities between these three versions, in both stories the main idea was the same but in the movie “Clash of the Titans” middle part was very long. The age of Perseus was different all the time. In the story Perseus doesn’t get a sword but he gets magic sandals. In the movie “Clash of the Titans” he kills scorpions. And only in this version he gets a riddle from Andromeda.
Perseus
ReplyDeleteIn the past few weeks we have read the Perseus story in the Greek Myths, watched the TV episode of the Perseus and we also watched the film version too. Today, I will summarize the story, the TV episode and the film.
The story: The main characters are Perseus, Medusa, Danae, King Polydectus, the Grey Sisters and Andromeda. It is set in Argos, a far away kingdom and Medusa’s lair at the end of the world. The action is when Perseus gets dared to bring Medusa’s head back to King Polydectus or he would marry Perseus’s mum. Perseus did just that, he brought the head of Medusa back and then he turned King Polydectus into stone. Perseus then saved Andromeda from the huge kraken.
The TV episode - The main characters are Perseus, Medusa, Danae, King Polydectus and Andromeda. The setting is the same as the story and the action too was the same.
The film, Clash of the Titans: The main characters are Perseus, Medusa, Calibos, Zeus, Kraken, Andromeda, three sisters and Pegasus. The setting is set in Joppa, Argos and Mount Olympus. The action is different to the story and TV. It’s about a young man called Perseus and he falls in love with the princess Andromeda. He wants to marry her but first he has to answer a riddle; he solved the riddle and marries Andromeda. He kills Calibos, Medusa and 3 giant scorpions.
Then 1st and 2nd were very similar but the 3rd was different because it had more description, there was only a little talk about Danae and there was nothing about King Polydectus.
Part 1
ReplyDelete(I wrote too much so I have to post two comments. Sorry!)
The Perseus myth
We have during the last few weeks been reading and watching the Greek myth Perseus. We have been reading one story and we have been watching two films. There are similarities and differences even though they all are the same. Here is a summary of every story we have been reading and watching.
The written version
The main characters in the written version of the story are Perseus, Medusa, Andromeda, Danae, king Acrisius, king Polydectes and the Gray Sisters. The main settings are the Kingdom far Argos, the End of the World and another kingdom on an island. The written story starts off with king Acrisius going to a fortune-teller. The fortune-teller tells the king that his daughter’s son, Perseus, will kill him. King Acrisius believes the fortune-teller and sends his daughter, Danae and Perseus away in a coffin to sea. After a long time a fisherman called Dictys finds them in the coffin. King Polydectes, the king of the island they are on, likes to collect wives. He falls in love with Danae. Danae manages to say no for seventeen years to king Polydectes and Perseus was now a young man. King Polydectes gets mad at Danae and tells his guards to force her to marry him. Perseus doesn’t want this to happen so he dares king Polydectes that if he would come back with the Gorgon Medusa’s head, his mum wouldn’t have to marry him. When the gods hear him say this they think Perseus is very brave and give him armour to cut off Medusa’s head. Perseus then goes to the Gray Sisters to get some advice. They tell him that if you look into her eyes you turn into stone. They also tell him where to find her. When Perseus finds the Gorgon Medusa he cuts off her head and returns back. But on the way back Perseus sees a country having trouble with a sea monster. Perseus kills the sea monster and falls in love with a girl called Andromeda. When Perseus and Andromeda return to the kingdom they are married. Perseus turns king Polydectes into stone and then they return to the Kingdom of Argos. Then Perseus becomes the king instead of king Acrisius. Danae marries the fisherman and everyone lives happy.
The “story teller” version
The main characters in the ”story teller” version of the story are Perseus, Medusa, Danae, King Acrisius, king Polydectes and the Gray Sisters. The main settings are the Kingdom of Argos, the End of the World, another kingdom far away and in the woods. This is nearly the same story as the written one. Like the other story it starts off with that king Acrisius goes to the fortune-teller. The fortune-teller tells him that his daughter’s son will kill him. King Acrisius puts his daughter, Danae in jail. After a few years Danae is still in jail and Zuse the king of the gods gives her a son because she wants one. When king Acrisius hears that Danae has a baby he gets angry and puts them in a coffin and the king sends them to sea. After a long time a fisherman finds them in the coffin. King Plydectes the king over the kingdom they are in falls in love with Danae. After some years he decides to marry her. Perseus doesn’t want this to happen so he dares king Polydectes that if he would come back with the Gorgon Medusa’s head his mum doesn’t have to marry him. When the gods hear Perseus say this they give him armour to cut off Medusa’s head. Then Perseus goes to the Gray Sisters and asks them how to find Medusa. Also they tell him that if you look into her eyes you turn into stone. After a day Perseus asks Atlas how far it is to Medusa’s home. When he finds the Gorgon Medusa he cuts off her head. On the way back to the kingdom he shows Atlas the head of Medusa. Atlas looks into her eyes and he turns into stone. At king Polydectes’s palace Perseus shows the head to king Polydectes too. He turns into stone like Atlas. Then Danae and Perseus live happy ever after.

Part 2
ReplyDeleteThe film version
The main characters of the film version of the Perseus myth are Perseus, Medusa, Ammon, Andromeda, Calibos and the Gray Sisters. The main settings are the village of Joppa, the woods, the palace and Medusa’s home. The story starts with king Acrisius sending his daughter, Danae and Perseus in a coffin to sea. The gods punish king Acrisius and his kingdom. Zuse the king of the gods sends the Kraken to destroy king Acrisius’s kingdom. The gods put Danae and Perseus on an island far away from Argos. After a few years Perseus has grown into a young man. One day Perseus wakes up in the middle of an arena and finds a man called Ammon. Perseus talks to Ammon about his life. Zuse tells the other gods to give Perseus armour to fight with. Then Perseus walks to a village on the island called Joppa. Perseus talks to a guard that tells him about a riddle. If you manage the riddle you get to marry Andromeda. Andromeda is the princess. At night Perseus sneaks into Andromada’s room and he sees her spirit walking towards a cage. Then a big bird comes for the cage and flies away with her and the cage. Then Perseus returns to Ammon’s house where Perseus tells him about Andromeda and the bird. Ammon tells Perseus about a flying horse called Pegasus. They decide to catch the horse in the evening. They manage to catch Pegasus and the day after Perseus follows the bird. They see the big bird land in the woods where Calibos lives. Calibos is a person that was transformed into a monster by Zuse. Perseus also sees Andromeda there. Every night the bird flies Andromeda to Calibos because she needs a riddle for the men that wants to marry her. Perseus sees the riddle for the next day and he flies back with Pegasus. The day after that Perseus tells Andromeda the answer of the riddle and he marries her. At the wedding a statue of Thesis’s head falls to the ground and tells Andromeda that in 30 days the village will sacrifice Andromeda to the Kraken. Perseus tells Ammon that it must be a way to kill the Kraken. Ammon tells him to go to the Gray Sisters to get some advise. The same night Calibos kidnaps Pegasus. When Perseus and his guards can’t find the flying horse the ride away with the horses that can’t fly to find the Gray Sisters. After some days in the desert they see an owl. The owl’s name is Bubo and he helps them to find the Gray Sisters. In a cave Perseus finds the Gray Sisters and he asks them how to kill the Kraken. The Gray Sisters say that the Gorgon Medusa can turn every living creature into stone. Then they say that if you look into Medusas eyes you turn into stone. The day after they continue their journey after Medusa. When they reach the Styx they ask the ferryman if he can take them over to Medusa. They fight Medusa and Perseus manages to cut off her head. After Perseus killed Medusa they asked the ferryman if he could take them back. While Perseus and his guards are sleeping Calibos spies on them and he tries to take the head of Medusa. Then everyone wakes up and Perseus kills Calibos too. Bubo the owl releases Pegasus from Calibos’s home and they fly back to get Perseus. When they get back they all see Andromeda hanging off a cliff. She is going to be sacrificed to the Kraken. Kraken shows up and Perseus turns him to stone. Then they lived happy ever after.
Similarities
One of the similarities in these three myths is that Perseus is in all of them. Danae, Perseus’s mum is also in the three myths. King Acrisius sends Perseus and his mum to sea in all of them. Also, Perseus kills Medusa and meets the Gray Sisters in all three myths.
Differences
The differences in these three myths are that in one of the myths (the ”story teller” version), the Kraken isn’t there but in the other two myths he is. Andromeda is in two of the myths (the written one and the film version) but not in the ”story teller” version. Also Bubo, the golden owl is in one myth (the film version) but not in the other two. And one myth (the film version) is a lot longer than the other two.

Part One
ReplyDeleteIn class we studied a Greek myth about a hero named Perseus. It was an interesting story and it had adventure in it and romance .We read the story and watched a movie version as well as a TV series called The Storyteller. The three versions had similarities and differences and I will tell you about them in this essay.
First of all I will give you a summary of the myth as told by Geraldine McCaughrean in her book Greek Myths. King Acrisius goes to see the fortune teller who tells him that his daughter Danae’s son Perseus will kill him. So he decides to put his daughter and grandson in a wooden chest and throw them out to sea. Fortunately they are found by a fisherman and survive. But then they are in trouble again as King Polydectes wants to marry Danae by force. To get rid of Perseus the King sets him a challenge to fetch the head of Medusa. Perseus knows that the witches know where Medusa lives and the gods help him by giving him weapons. Perseus manages to cut Medusa’s head and on his way back home he saves a Princess Andromeda from a sea monster. He then marries her and takes Andromeda home with him. To celebrate their return they have a competition and Perseus takes part in the discus throwing. But when he throws it the discus hits someone in the crowd. Perseus’s grandfather dies at the end because he is in the crowd and the person who the discus hits.
In the TV version called The Storyteller King Acrisius finds out from the fortune teller about the oracle before Perseus is born and puts his daughter in a cell. But Perseus is born and he is the son of the god Zeus. Perseus and Danae are put in the chest and thrown out to sea and are saved by a fisherman. Then King Polydectes sees Perseus’s mother and wants to marry her. So Perseus says that he will cut off Medusa’s head to save his mother. He goes to find Medusa and is helped by the gods who give him weapons. First he finds the witches so that they can tell him where Medusa is. He also sees Atlas who is holding up the sky as a punishment. Perseus saves his mother from marrying the King Polydectes by showing him the Medusa head and King Polydectes turns him to stone. Again Perseus’s grandfather dies when a discus hits him on the head when he is in the crowd.
Part Two
ReplyDeleteLastly the movie is called The Clash of The Titans. King Acrisius puts Danae and her son Perseus into the chest and throws them into the sea. Zeus tells the Sea God to release the sea monster, to destroy the city Argos because the people have been bad there. Perseus lands in Joppa and when he wakes up he is confused but he meets an old man who helps him. The gods give him gifts which have magic powers. Perseus then talks to a guard called Thallos who tells him about Andromeda the princess and about the riddle. Perseus finds Andromeda asleep in her bed. He then sees that every night she has to visit a monster called Calibos and she is taken to him by a bird in a cage. Perseus follows her one night using a flying white horse. He then cuts Calibos’ hand off and returns it to Andromeda’s mother the Queen and solves the riddle. Andromeda and Perseus are going to get married but the gods punish Joppa and Andromeda has to be a sacrifice to the sea monster. So Perseus finds out that he has to cut off the head of the gorgon Medusa to save Joppa. Once he knows where Medusa lives as he tricks the 3 witches to tell him he finds the gorgon. Perseus is clever and cuts off her head with the gifts that the gods give him. He returns to Joppa just in time and shows the head to the Sea Monster who turns to stone. Perseus nearly lost the head as Calibos tried to steal it but they have a fight and Perseus wins and kills Calibos too. There is an owl made out of metal called Bibo which helps Perseus. At the end Andromeda is saved and Zeus tells the gods that they mustn’t harm Perseus anymore and he has shown a lot of courage.
Although this was the same story there were similarities and differences between the 3 versions. Most of the main characters were the same and the head of Medusa was important in all of the stories as Perseus had to cut the head off and turn the bad characters to stone. Also another thing that was similar was that the gods helped Perseus by giving him gifts and Andromeda was saved. The film version The Clash of the Titans was a longer story and had more characters in it and more things happening like Calibos being the son of one of the gods and the flying horse and the owl. Also King Acrisius was not in the story except for the beginning.
